Faced with a lot four blocks away from the beach and a request to rethink the existing pool house, this was not only a fresh, updated design—complete with one-bedroom apartment—but also a dramatic new entryway into what was transformed from a single house-on-a-lot into a residential courtyard compound.
The owners, a couple in their fifties, initially wanted a simple addition to the existing pool house; a quick study of the site and lot lines indicated two setback requirements: one for a principal residence and one for accessory buildings. Working with the definition of the pool house as an accessory, the apartment was able to sit on top of the pool house by maintaining the principal setback, which is larger than the setback requirement for accessory buildings.
The strategy for this design was to preserve what already exists while introducing a completely new program. Here, the new building blends seamlessly with the old building, not only through the rigorous material clarity—a textured wooden screen motif appears throughout the design.
The pool area currently feels much more enclosed, a quality the clients very much wanted, while a new deck, now the top of the pool house, offers a centrally orienting lounge zone. Formally, the new design is a series of almost interlocking blocks with extruded windows and recessed voids that create a sense of visual rhythm. Long expanses of wood siding, coupled with various thicknesses and widths of wooden slats, offer a variegated and textural experience, demarcating the house’s zones and showing off the facility with subtle material interventions that have a major effect. Inside the one-bedroom unit on the pool house’s top floor, cool blues work together with expertly controlled sunlight to create a classic New England beach shack with an extra dose of Hamptons sophistication.
